The order fee
Tesla’s support page says that when you place an order "you will pay a one-time, non-refundable order fee". The detail of when the fee may or may not come back, and what happens if an order is cancelled or delivery doesn’t go ahead, is in Tesla’s Motor Vehicle Order Agreement for Australia. We couldn’t read that document in full, so check the version you agreed to rather than rely on a summary.
Does Tesla have a refund policy for cars?
Not one we could find. The order fee is about the order. Once the car is delivered, a problem with it is a question for the consumer guarantees rather than a Tesla policy. Tesla sells its cars directly rather than through dealerships, so the business that sold you the car and the one that made it are both Tesla. Can I get a refund on a car and can I return a brand new car cover the general position.
What Tesla’s warranty covers
According to Tesla’s warranty page
- the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty covers the car for five years with unlimited km under normal use
- the Supplemental Restraint System is covered for five years or 100,000 km
- the battery and drive unit are covered for eight years, and 160,000 or 192,000 km depending on the model, with minimum 70% battery capacity retention
- body rust perforation from a defect is covered for 12 years, with no rust cover for cars bought before 1 February 2019
Tesla notes that coverage varies by delivery date, model and trim, and that the warranty document supplied with the car is the one that counts.
Where brokencar fits
If your Tesla has a fault that hasn’t been put right, we can take a look. We read your paperwork and tell you honestly whether there may be a claim worth making, and if there is, we take it up with Tesla on your behalf.
