Toyota refund policy in Australia

Short answer

Toyota doesn’t publish a refund or change-of-mind return policy for its cars that we could find. What it does publish is a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, and a Customer Charter that says the consumer guarantees apply alongside it and may continue after it ends.

What Toyota publishes

Toyota calls its warranty the Toyota Warranty Advantage. According to Toyota’s warranty page

  • new Toyotas bought after 1 January 2019 have a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, or five years or 160,000 km for commercial use
  • the engine and driveline warranty extends to seven years from delivery when logbook servicing is done at Toyota
  • hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and 48V traction batteries can be covered for up to 10 years with an annual battery health check at Toyota
  • the warranty stays with the car if it’s sold

Toyotas bought before 1 January 2019 have a three-year or 100,000 km warranty. Conditions apply throughout, and Toyota’s full terms set them out.

Does Toyota have a refund policy?

Not one we could find. Toyota’s published material is about warranty repairs and resolving customer concerns, not about taking a car back because a buyer has changed their mind. Whether a refund may be on the table for a faulty Toyota is a question for the consumer guarantees rather than a Toyota policy, which can I get a refund on a car covers.

What Toyota says about the consumer guarantees

Toyota’s Customer Charter is direct about this. It says the guarantees in the Australian Consumer Law "cannot be replaced, limited or removed by any agreement, contract or warranty", and that they may continue to apply after the Toyota warranty has expired. That’s the same point made in out of warranty, still have rights?

How Toyota says to raise a concern

The charter sets out Toyota’s own order. Talk to the dealership first. If that doesn’t resolve it, ask for the General Manager or Dealer Principal. If it’s still unresolved, Toyota’s Customer Assistance Centre is on 1800 869 682 or customerassistance@toyota.com.au, Monday to Friday. Toyota also publishes a complaint handling process.

Questions people also ask

Does the Toyota warranty cover everything for five years?

Not everything. Toyota’s own page lists separate periods for some parts, such as two years for the standard 12-volt battery, and conditions and exclusions apply. A problem outside the warranty may still be covered by the consumer guarantees.

Do I have to service at Toyota to keep the extra cover?

Toyota’s page says the extra two years on the engine and driveline depend on logbook servicing at Toyota, and the longer battery cover depends on an annual battery health check at Toyota. The standard five-year warranty has its own conditions, which Toyota’s full terms set out.

Can I return a Toyota to the dealership?

Not just because you’ve changed your mind, as far as we could find. If the car has a fault the consumer guarantees cover, a return may be one of the options, depending on how serious the fault is.

Is my Toyota still covered after the warranty ends?

It may be. Toyota’s Customer Charter says the consumer guarantees may continue to apply after the warranty has expired. Whether they do for your car depends on the fault, the car’s age and how it’s been used.
